Government shines spotlight on corporate philanthropy

Corporate philanthropyDeputy Prime Minister and Federal Treasurer Wayne Swan has commissioned a report exploring how the Australian business sector can better support charities.

Adding gravitas to the study, the Government has created the new role of Special Adviser to the Deputy PM on Corporate Philanthropy and the Not For Profit Sector. Federal Labour MP Michael Danby has been appointed to the role and will spend the coming months consulting with business and the Third Sector. Danby's report is expected mid-2011.

Meanwhile in the UK, Third Sector Fundraising reports Civil Society Minister Nick Hurd has invited charities and business to advise the government how it can improve payroll giving.Speaking at the National Payroll Giving Excellence Awards in London last week, Hurd told the audience the sector is “just scratching the surface".

At the same event, Institute of Fundraising Chair Paul Amadi said the fundraising potential of workplace giving was under-appreciated.
